Simple textarea count down was created by sjb1963

If you're looking for a way to add a character counter to a text area, This works:

    $("textarea[id='field7']").attr("maxlength", "300");
    $("textarea[id='field7']").keyup(function () {
        if (this.value.length === 0) {
            $("#limit").show();
            $("#remaining").hide();
        } else {
            $("#limit").hide();
            $("#remaining").show();
        }
        if (this.value.length > 300) {
            return false;
        }
        $("[class='count']").html("You have " + (300 - this.value.length) + "/300 characters remaining");
    });
});

I recommend you the new and up-to-date documentation for Joomla 4:

Most of this also applies retrospectively to Joomla 3.
