Is there a way to have the thank you message appear where the form is after submitting?

So you fill out the form, press submit and a message appears either in place of the form or just above it, instead of just having the system message displayed on the homepage or going to a separate thank you page.

no. Just those both options as you describe.

Most of this also applies retrospectively to Joomla 3.
